ITIL® is a Registered Trade Mark, and a Registered Community Trade Mark of the Office of Government Commerce, and is Registered in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

During the late 1980's, ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) became the worldwide de-facto standard in IT Service Management. Starting as a guide for the UK Government, the framework proved to be useful to other IT Organizations and was adopted as the bases for consultancy, education and software tool support. Today ITIL is known and used worldwide.

The Office of Government Commerce (OGC) is an office of the HM Treasury. In September 2000, the OGC incorporated the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA), which no longer operates as a separate agency.

The OGC is now the authority for best practice in commercial activities in UK Government combining a number of separate functions with related aims.

The OGC has appointed the IT Service Management Forum (itSMF) to oversee the Examination bodies on their behalf as they acknowledge that the itSMF, through its very large membership has been influential in promoting industry best practice and driving updates to ITIL. However, the OGC remains the controlling entity of ITIL.
